Equality Wisconsin seeks to improve the quality of life of gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people in Wisconsin by winning concrete legislative victories that establish equal rights under the law. Equality Wisconsin Fund is a charitable organization that seeks to better the lives of Wisconsin LGBT people by increasing public understanding and improved public policy through education, organizing, and civic engagement.

Equality Wisconsin has helped gay and lesbian couples gain access to family health insurance and recognition through domestic partner initiatives at the City of Milwaukee (2001) and Milwaukee Public Schools (2007-8). Equality Wisconsin won state resources to increase services to low-income and at risk LGBT people in the 18 counties in the Madison and Milwaukee metropolitan areas in 2007. The organization has helped trained State of Wisconsin staff on gender identity, won protections for transgender and gender-non-conforming Milwaukee residents in 2007, and has played a leading role in a statewide effort to add gender identity protections to Wisconsin law. Equality Wisconsin was the co-founder of the 2006 Fair Wisconsin campaign, and was incorporated as Center Advocates as a nonprofit organization in 2001 from elements of the LGBT Alliance for Equality and the Human Rights League. The organization changed its name to Equality Wisconsin in 2009 to better reflect its mission.

Equality Wisconsin Fund is a charitable nonprofit organization founded in 2008. The organization is increasing understanding in Wisconsin’s diverse communities with education and organizing, including the “Voices of Faith” Project and the LGBT-Latino Family Unity Project.

This website collectively refers to two organizations, “Equality Wisconsin” and “Equality Wisconsin Fund.” Although there is some overlap in the work done by each organization, certain activities must be done by one organization and not the other. This is primarily in the area of lobbying. Equality Wisconsin engages in direct legislative advocacy. Equality Wisconsin Fund’s lobbying activities are limited because donations to it are tax-deductible to the donor. Therefore, most of the lobbying activity discussed in this website is done by Equality Wisconsin.
