posted Feb 20, 2012 11:00 AM by Jason Burns

On Tuesday, February 21st the primaries for the County and City of Milwaukee will be held.  Please take a minute and review our Voter Education Guide.  This guide shows how elected officials and candidates answered the Equality Wisconsin Survey.  Unfortunately due to time constraints we were not able to include every survey submitted for our Primary Voter Guide.  Equality Wisconsin is committed to educating our members of the views of any candidate who submits a response to our survey, and our General Election Voter Guide will include all surveys submitted for any applicable candidate.

Wisconsin Clergy Thank Sen. Leahy and Sen. Feinstein

posted Nov 17, 2011 9:25 AM by Lizzi Dahlk

The letter below was sent to Senators Patrick Leahy and Dianne Feinstein, thanking them for their efforts in repealing DOMA. Rev. Andrew Warner, pastor of Plymouth Church, Milwaukee, along with 24 other clergy from around our state made their voices heard. (They are all members of Voices of Faith, a project within Equality Wisconsin Fund.)
Dear Senator Patrick Leahy,

Thank you for taking the initiative to overturn the Defense of Marriage Act passed by Congress in 1999. As a member of Voices of Faith, a project within Equality Wisconsin, I am deeply opposed to any law that excludes or discriminates against members of my congregation.

In 2006, when the State Legislature of Wisconsin proposed a constitutional amendment that banned gay marriage, my congregation joined with others across the state to prevent its passage. Unfortunately, we were unsuccessful.

Since then, however, this coalition has worked vigorously to advocate for our lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender communities, and has helped our members become open and welcoming to them. We have made our voices strong as an alternative to the often hateful lmessage spread by the Religious Right.

I believe God's love encompasses all of us. As the creating account, sacred to Jews and Christians alike, affirms, human beings are created in the image of God. Overturning the Defense of Marriage Act honors the human dignity of LGBT people.

Your work deeply matters. As President Reagan once said, "Freedom is never more than one generation away from extinction. You and I must protect and preserve freedom here, or it will not be passed on to our children, and it would disappear everywhere in the world." In that speech, Reagan was linking the freedom of Americans with the quest for freedom in communist countries. His point still holds; we must protect our freedom by protecting the freedom of others because our lives are interdependent. Your work advances the freedom of all Americans by ensuring that no Americans are discriminated against.

Sincerely,
Andrew Warner, Pastor Rev. Curt Anderson, Sr. Minister, First Congregational UCC, Madison

Great News for Latina/o LGBT Immigrants

posted Aug 23, 2011 11:58 AM by Allie Eastwood   [ updated Aug 23, 2011 12:08 PM by Jonathon Flynn ]

Today the Obama administration announced important reforms to federal immigration policy. Longtime residents with clean police records who came here illegally as children, or are close family of military service members, or are parents or spouses of American citizens will no longer be deported.  Federal law doesn’t recognize same-sex marriages, but officials said the will consider same-sex spouses as “family” in their review of deportation cases.  See the full New York Times article at http://www.nytimes.com/2011/08/23/us/23immig.html?emc=eta1.

Huge Victory for Domestic Partners

posted Oct 15, 2009 8:02 AM by Jonathon Flynn   [ updated Aug 9, 2011 6:22 AM ]

We did it! On Wednesday, August 4, 2011, Milwaukee County Executive Chris Abele signed a bill authorizing domestic partner health benefits for county employees.

Those gathered for this joyous occasion were from diverse communities, including African-American, Latino, religious, and LGBT. We celebrated a major step toward protecting all employees against discrimination, recognizing that until all people are treated fairly, we are all at risk.

It is doubly satisfying victory because two years ago, when Equality Wisconsin also led the grassroots organizing, the Milwaukee County Board of Supervisors passed a similar bill, only to have it vetoed by then-Executive Scott Walker. Thanks go to our staff, board, and members, who again worked diligently to bring fairness and justice to our community.
